Children of the Mountains

We viewed the 20/20 Special "A Hidden America/Children of the Mountains" on Monday. How do you feel that this culture got into the povertous situation that it is in today? What can be done to help the people of Appalachia?

I think the culture got in this situation because nobody seemed to spend their money wisely, they always used it on drugs and MOUNTAIN DEW. [:
I think people should raise money to help the people of the Appalachia to re-build their spirits and also, people should help them find jobs and get some of those kids back in school. They should also inforce the use of drugs a lot harder because that also seems to be a problem.

i think that culture is the way it is because it hasn't known any better.. in a sense. i mean, the people before them probably were like that too, just because they aren't used to living any other kind of way. i think appalachia needs help from us. they need schools close by that people without cars can get there. if they had a good education then maybe they wouldn't be where they are. plus, they need more help with medicines and stuff like that. we should donate our money and time to help them out!

The culture there is the way it is right now due to lack of awareness outside of their environment. Many of us didn't know anything about this situation until we saw the video. I think instead of us trying to help everybody else(undeveloped countries), first we need to fix the country within then outward.

I think that isolation led to this issue. When the culture was isolated from the rest of the United States they could not economically develope. In a sense they were left behind. The people were left ignorent on some levels and as a result they don't realize the severity of alchoel or mountain dew. :( I think that it'll take more than money to help them. We have to educate them and take away their unhealthy lifestyle. It'll take a lot of reform and also a lot of effort both on the reformers side as well as on their side. They have always needed help. I hope this video got more people aware and ready to help them.

I think the culture is the way it is because that's how it's always been for them. Some people just become so content that they never think anything about it. I think they can change their state of poverty by spending their money wisely and saving it as well.

I think those mountain people are in the situation they are in just because they don't know any better. There did not seem to be any major industry there so some of them had to hustle prescription pills not the smartest nor the most highly thought about way to get money but they did what they had to do. The government needs to go in there and take over and try to better these people and make a brighter future for the the little mountain kids.I also strongly think they need to stop hating on soft drink companies to much of a good thing is always bad but have some self restraint.

I think maybe someone should start a fund... and maybe someone in a political position could bring in help from wealthier people. (But those who are offering. Not like socialism or anything) I don't know. THe best thing might just be to focus on educating them with life skills.

i think they got this way because they weren't wise with their money...i think it would help if there were some paved roads and transportation sent that way so they could have easier access to a job.

I think the culture got in this situation by losing hope. i think they did not have enough faith in themselves that they could improve their culture. that they could make it how they wanted it to be. they didn't know how to make it work. I also think that they let drugs get the best of them. so many of the people that we saw were horribly addicted to drugs. they really need someone to enforce some punishment for that.

its a generational problem in appalachia the people need someone to show them the strong work ethic and possibly they could stop there chane of poverty

It was an issue in each generation that has done nothing but become a bigger problem. These are citizens who aren't getting help when it is clearly needed. The public hardly knows of them as if the government is hiding this situatuion. We as a country should be helping these people out of poverty. They needed help when they were children and they are passing it on to their kids. The drug abuse and unemployment should be brought attention to.

the location of the area had a great affect on the bad shape that it got into today. the drug abuse was a major issue in the area. i think that people all around the U.S should be aware of what these people are facing, and try to help them out.

the reason they were in that situaton in mainly because of the region that they live in.it was something that had gone on in the past.but drug abuse and alcohol abuse is a factor as well..&& who new mountain deww was soo badd! woww, that was shocking! i don't think they should blame the company though. but in order to reshape this society they are going to have enforce strict laws.

Wow, that video was extremely sad. Honestly.. as much as it was sad, it kind of makes me angry.
Nobody did that to them, the situation they're in is no one's fault but theirs or their ancestors. It's not like we made them live that way. It's sad but I don't think that we should HAVE to do something just because they aren't as well off as some people. If people want to donate, then I don't see a problem with that but other then that.. we shouldn't have to give them our money.

I think that it's their fault that they live like that. They should move. They should also stop spending the little money they do have on mountain dew and drugs. I think the government should help them out of their poverty because they're humans and deserve to be treated that way.

I think they got into this situation because their ancestors were like this. They were born into poverty so it is harder to get out. The government needs to help more and offer more rehab facialities for them.

I think they are in that situation bc they chose to be.... to me they spent their money on things that didn't really matter.... like moutaindue!!!!! And i think their culture is like that bc thats the only way they know.... its like they don't really know any better
